The increase in outpatient care centers is one factor that may create new jobs. RNs provide care in a variety of settings, including nursing homes and hospitals. In addition, job growth is expected in facilities that treat people with Alzheimer’s disease.

As of 2012, there are approximately 5.7 million people in the United States who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. By 2050, this number will be up to 13 million, with an estimated $1 trillion cost. The disease is also a significant cause of death for older adults, killing more people than breast cancer combined. Alzheimer’s alone accounts for about a third of all healthcare expenditures in the U.S., accounting for $290 billion in medical and nursing costs. It also consumes approximately one percent of the world’s GDP.
The National Plan for Alzheimer’s Disease recognizes that the field requires coordinated efforts across sectors. HHS is taking transformative action, relying on the Advisory Council to identify areas of progress and provide input on priority areas. In addition, federal and state agencies are marshaling resources and collaborating to implement the National Plan. However, the pace of change is slow, and this prevents many from planning for the major ramifications of an eventual cure.

A master’s degree in nursing increases a nurse’s pay by about $7,000 per year. An RN with an associate’s degree earns approximately $37,000 per year. Advanced Practice Nurses, Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives earn approximately $110,000 annually. As an RN, your salary will likely rise significantly more with your degree, as the level of responsibility and training you acquire will make your salary higher. MS-degreed nurses can expect salaries similar to those of RNs, but in higher-paying positions.
